Afloat and Ashore – the fun just keeps on coming at the Royal Southern’s Open Motor Boat Weekend 27 – 29 May 2011
The Motor Boat Committee has been hard at work behind the scenes at the Hamble-based Royal Southern Yacht Club to engage with some of the top companies operating within the leisure marine market and Club members alike. Working together they have produced a superb programme of competitive activities on the water alongside a terrific line-up of social activities ashore for this, the 12th Annual Open Motor Boat Weekend.
The Weekend starts on Friday evening 27th May and finishes on Sunday 29th May. Since first announcing the dates and outlining the draft programme for 2011, the Motor Boat Division is delighted to have secured high profile distributor entries from Fleming Yachts and, more recently, Sunseeker who will be competing for the C-QUIP Marine Distributor Trophy.
According to Sales Manager Mark Noble, “Now that the Sunseeker London Group has spread its UK sales operation further to be part of the busy power boating area of the Hamble, we are proud to support the Royal Southern Yacht Club’s annual Motorboat Open Weekend. Two like minded organisations that share a long history of power boating.”
The Open Motor Boat Weekend provides private boat owners, skippers and crews with a unique mix of waterborne competition, relaxed ambiance, good food and the chance to make new friends, discover new things about the Solent and other interesting motor boats. This is all about a friendly weekend for motor boating people rather than a racing event. Every motor boat entered, whether modern or classic, stands an equal chance of winning prizes. There are three competitive elements, each of which has a trophy and scores points, accruing to provide an overall score.
Any motor vessel that can maintain an average of 10 knots or more is eligible for entry, from a 20 metre cruiser to a 6 metre RIB.
Boat owners may enter the Open Weekend competitions as an individual entry and also compete for the Southern Inter-Club Team Trophy, to be contested by teams of three vessels. These vessels may be of the same or different manufacture, from a single club, be it yacht club or owners club, or just friends and the points accrued by the three vessels over the three competitions will aggregate to the team score.
Entries are being encouraged from individuals as well as team entries of three boats. There is also a separate course for RIBs that will be competing for the EP Barrus RIB Trophy.
The Open Motor Boat Weekend incorporates three practical tests of seamanship, including a Predicted Log and a Poker Run, all taking place within the Solent. Berthing has been reserved in Cowes Yacht Haven over lunchtime on Saturday 28th May and there will be an opportunity to go ashore before the afternoon Poker Run return to the Royal Southern Yacht Club.
The packed social programme commences with a drinks reception and BBQ on the Friday evening, followed by a Saturday night buffet, band and disco. The band is the amazing soul band Rufus Stone, kindly sponsored by MDL Marinas, with Alex Shute of Flex Mobile DJ’s. The poker hand is also played during the evening.
Following Sunday’s Treasure Hunt competition, a lunch and prize-giving event will take place at the Royal Southern Yacht Club. Competitors are set to enjoy the relaxed ambiance and hospitality of the Royal Southern during what has become an essentially friendly weekend for those who enjoy motor boating.
There are a number of valued partners involved in providing what will be a truly memorable Open Weekend for everyone involved. These include Coastline RIBs, C-Quip Marine, Force 4, GJW Direct, MDL Marinas, Raymarine, SeaStart, Swordsman Marine, TS Marine.
